Understanding Why More Victims Of Violence & Abuse Won’t Come Forward

The following essay I wrote in response to the question of why some victims of violent crimes – especially rape don’t come forward. I hope this helps in the better understanding of victims’ mind sets and challenges.

Getting help becomes a full time job in itself.  It takes a considerable amount of time to do research. Finding the right help is paramount. Weeding through doctors, lawyers, clinics, hospitals, websites, referrals, references, emails, phone calls and the police is time consuming and at times frustrating.

Police – over worked, desensitized, might not complete paperwork or conduct proper or thorough investigations. Majority of police are men, and if the victim is a woman there might be power games being played such as the victim being made to feel they are overly emotional and that they should trust the police officer to do their job with no questions asked.

Victim may feel isolated and that they have no one to talk to. They also may feel pressure from family members, loved ones , friends  or co-workers not to come forward, to let the abuse go, or to not go to the authorities. They also may be threaten, intimidated and bullied not to come forward by the assailant(s), attorneys and others in their immediate circle and beyond in social media. Victims also have to contend with people saying it was their fault or that they are lying or it is all in their head – “That they are crazy!”

Shame is a big problem.  Talking about the crime can produce ridicule, self doubt and feelings of low self esteem. Repeating details of the crime or incident to doctors, police officers, lawyers, family and employer may cause further feelings of depression and shame.

Feeling violated again when the details of the crime become public record.

Women tend to be conditioned to not want to cause waves, to give others multiple chances, to take care of others more than they take care of their own needs.

Losing time from work pursuing justice or getting help might not be a viable option for some. Others may not have access to adequate health care or day care.

Getting help is expensive. Paying for transportation to go to appointments, to meet with police, to pay for additional expenses as a result of the crime can be daunting. If a survivor of violence is living pay check to pay check or doesn’t have a source of their own income, leaving or getting professional help may not be an immediate, cost effective or a realistic option.

The mental pain as well as the physical pain may take months, years or a lifetime to manage.

And what I found out in my own case that gave me a greater understanding of why so many women in the Bill Cosby case didn’t or waited years to tell their stories is:  just because one is a victim in a violent crime, there is no guarantee that you will be believed or helped by attorneys who want to make money. All victims of violent crimes are not a slam dunk in the money department and many lawyers don’t want to rock the boat by going up against a “Celebrity” with corporate connections and a fat wallet.

It is the victim’s ultimate choice to come forward and roll the dice or not. There are no guarantees that justice will win but by telling the truth, providing evidence and healing, one may turn from a victim to a survivor to a Thriver thus educating others while repairing one’s self.

Katt Williams Makes Joke Of Justice & His Victims

KAT Williams (1)
On Sunday July 24th, Katt Williams was arrested for suspicion of attacking a female employee at the Sportsmens’ Lodge in Studio City, CA. He was arrested and released on $20,000 bail. My question is why is Katt Williams out on bail in the first place?

In 2016 alone, Williams has been arrested at least 6 times:
1. 02/29/16 Punching A Leslie’s Pool Employee
2. 03/11/16 Holding 5 women at gun point and stealing their cameras
3. 03/09/16 Williams was arrested for a February crime for threatening his body guard – During a GA Police raid they found firearms and weed
4. 03/30/16 Katt Williams arrested for Fighting with a Teenager in Georgia
5. 04/28/16 Charged with Battery after Williams hit Waffle House manager with salt shaker
6. 07/24/16 Katt Williams accused of attacking female employee of The Sportsmen’s Lodge

Most of us regular law abiding citizens if accused of multiple serious crimes as well as having previous criminal records in multiple states and jurisdictions, we would not receive the repeated opportunities to post bail and to commit more “allege” crimes but we aren’t Williams.

Katt Williams is special.

Full disclosure, I am the photographer that was threaten, assaulted and robbed in the case involving Marion Suge Knight and Katt Williams.

Like many of the other victims, I have wondered why so many on social media and other news sites have previously made jokes of Katt Williams’ crimes?
Even one martial arts school took it upon itself to offer Katt Williams free classes after he was taken down by a teenager that he sucker punched. We live in a world where if someone is a celeb and/or rich they get a free pass to commit crimes over and over again. The victims are left with the carnage and the laugh track of sites like tmz and other negative promoters. It is all a big joke. Those so called “news sites” that strive for ratings over the truth, forget or intentionally don’t report the important facts.

Here is a big one – According to Zap2it.com from August 2013:
“Williams pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge on Monday (Aug. 19) in response to a Nov. 25 incident in which he struck a Target employee in Woodland, CA, a local CBS website reports. He was sentenced to one year of informal probation and ordered to stay away from the Woodland Target. Additionally, he was levied with a 10-year firearm prohibition and a $200 fine.”

Katt Williams obviously is big business. B.E.T. recently had Williams as a headliner and VH1 has exploited having Katt Williams being connected to the VH1’s Love & Hip Hop franchise. The court system makes money on all the cases that Williams has to post bail. The lawyers make money defending a repeat offender who always seems to have money to stay out of jail. It appears that negative publicity gets Katt Williams new gigs.

In 2013 the Sacramento Court demanded that Mr. Williams not be in possession of firearms for ten years which would mean until 2023. Not only has the “funny man” been shown in a March 2016 video playing with a gun while explaining his beat down in Philadelphia but while Katt Williams’ home was raided in Georgia during a search warrant, (after William’s body guard was held hostage) the GA police found weed and weapons.

I’m not a lawyer but why is Katt Williams given repeat passes when facing the Law that all of the rest of us easily respect? Why is Williams so special? It is truly sickening to wake up and to find out that Katt Williams threaten, injured and victimized someone else while the survivors of his madness attempt to move on with their life and try to heal themselves. Katt Williams’ theft of the Law is no laughing matter. It says a lot about the culture of celebrity and the cruelness of our country – coddling a comedian over facts.

Lastly, why is a repeat offender in multiple jurisdictions previous actions not held accountable in recent cases as a reflection of his/her character?
Yet victim’s names and privacy can be violated repeatedly for click bait sites?
